THIS BACCHANAL features women, epitomized by the naked nymph who brazenly offers herself to the viewer. Alternatively titled the Stream of Wine on the Island of Andros, we see the miracle of Bacchus' wine replacing the spring water issuing from the ground and the sheet music in the foreground states: "Who drinks and does not drink again does not know what drinking is." This fourth bacchanal (for adults) is described in the writings of the classical author Philotratus. |
