 Artist's styles

The first question when studying a painting is how does it look? The Feast of the Gods contains the styles of three different artist's hands. The biggest difference is between Bellini's figures, and Titian's landscape, but there are subtle questions as well. In the figure below, you can compare details of paintings by each artist to get a sense for their individual styles. Please click the Subject and Artists. Click any painting to enlarge.

In particular, one esoteric detail has perplexed scholars of this picture. Who painted the pheasant? The paint layer is higher around the bird, suggesting that the pheasant is older than the surrounding trees. But that evidence itself proves nothing. We encourage you to look at the birds by Bellini, Dosso, and Titian, and to form you own opinion.
